Industrial Design registration now available

Qatar has officially activated its industrial design protection system, following the entry into force of Ministerial Decision No. 129 of 2024. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) began receiving applications on 26 October 2025, marking the first time design owners can file locally in Qatar.

The new framework puts in place the practical mechanisms for registering and enforcing industrial designs, giving businesses a clearer route to protect the appearance of products and packaging in one of the region’s fastest-growing markets.

Key Features of the New System

• Protection now covers the aesthetic or ornamental aspects of products, including shape, pattern, and configuration
• A 12-month grace period allows designers to file even after prior disclosure
• Priority claims may be filed within six months under the Paris Convention
• Foreign applicants must apply through a locally licensed agent
• Designs are examined, published, and then registered if no opposition is filed

Duration and Enforcement

• Initial protection lasts five years, renewable twice for a total of 15 years
• Infringement includes unauthorized use or imitation of a registered design
• The Regulations provide access to civil and administrative enforcement channels through MOCI
