Mandatory TM recordation for imports into mainland

Effective 1 December 2025, the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) will implement a mandatory trademark recordation system for all trademarks covering goods imported into Mainland Tanzania, regardless of the country of registration.

Key points:

- Recordation is required for lawful importation of goods.
- Applications must be filed per class (multi-class not allowed).
- Only duly appointed agents (via Power of Attorney) may act before the FCC.
- Recordation is valid for 1 year, renewable annually.
- Criminal sanctions apply for false or misleading information.

Trademark owners conducting business in Tanzania and importing goods into the country should ensure compliance to avoid trade disruptions and benefit from proactive protection against counterfeit imports.
