Growth in Intellectual Property

The National Institute of Industrial Property (BPTO) released preliminary statistics for 2024 on Wednesday, January 8. The accumulated data reveals important trends in the sector, highlighting significant increases in various areas of intellectual property.

Demand for Trademarks Leads the Growth

The standout area was trademarks, which saw a 10.3% increase compared to 2023, totaling 444,037 applications throughout the year. This growth reflects a thriving market, as companies increasingly seek to protect their corporate identities in an increasingly competitive economic environment.

Expansion in Technology and Design

Other areas also recorded significant growth:

Computer programs: With an impressive 25.5% increase, the number of registrations highlights the advancement of intellectual protection in the technology sector, which is increasingly essential in the digital world.

Integrated circuit topographies: This category experienced a remarkable 500% increase in applications, reflecting the growing importance of the semiconductor and electronic devices industry in Brazil.

Industrial designs: A 3.1% growth demonstrates that companies are investing in protecting their unique projects and designs, which are critical for standing out in a globalized market.

Patent applications remained stable, with a slight 0.8% decrease, totaling 27,701 requests, while technology contracts saw a significant 22.5% reduction, reflecting recent modifications related to foreign remittance of royalties and transfer pricing legislation.

The preliminary data for 2024 indicate an optimistic scenario, particularly in trademarks and technology, which continue to grow robustly.
