Joins the Paris Convention and Madrid Protocol

The Ethiopian government has now deposited its instrument of accession to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Madrid Protocol. Ethiopia will officially become a member of the Paris Union on 15 August 2025.

The Paris Convention lets applicants from other member countries keep their original filing date when applying for intellectual property rights in Ethiopia. This means patent owners can file in Ethiopia within 12 months of filing elsewhere and still keep their earlier date. Ethiopia’s accession to the Madrid Protocol further enhances global trademark protection by enabling international applications designating Ethiopia to be filed through a single WIPO-administered system. This development not only supports stronger IP rights enforcement but also encourages cross-border investment and technology transfer.
