Nice Classification 13th edition introduces updates to goods and services

WIPO has released the 13th Edition of the Nice Classification, the international system used for classifying goods and services in trademark registrations. As part of its regular update cycle, the new edition introduces adjustments to the classification of various goods and services, including the reallocation of certain items to different classes.

The changes continue the shift toward classifying goods and services based on their functional use rather than traditional industry categories. Several classes have been updated, including Classes 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 26, 29 and 45.

Trade mark owners are advised to review their existing and planned filings to ensure correct classification under the new edition, as the updates may affect filing strategies and portfolio management.

Many jurisdictions automatically apply each new edition of the Nice Classification and its annual updates as soon as they enter into force, without requiring national implementing legislation. By contrast, some countries adopt new editions only after national regulations are issued, apply older editions for long periods, or accept newer editions with local deviations or practice notes

This is still common in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and some Asian and Latin American jurisdictions, where classification practice may lag behind WIPO updates.
