IP Law Amendments enter into force soon

On May 7, 2026, Uzbekistan adopted Law No. LRU-1144, introducing amendments to its intellectual property framework. The law enters into force on August 8, 2026.

A key change concerns trade mark use: licensing agreements will no longer automatically qualify as actual use of a trade mark. Owners must therefore be able to demonstrate genuine commercial use, particularly in view of possible non-use cancellation actions after three years of continuous non-use.

The law also clarifies procedures for early termination of trade mark registrations, which must now be filed directly with the court in cases such as liquidation of the owner or death of an individual owner without heirs.

In addition, the reform updates official fees for patents, utility models, industrial designs, software, databases, and appeals before the Board of Appeal.

The amendments reflect Uzbekistan’s continued efforts to modernise its IP system and are particularly relevant for brand owners, technology companies, and foreign investors.
