Jersey to introduce independent Trademark System

Significant changes to trademark protection in Jersey will take effect on 1 August 2026, when the Trade Marks (Jersey) Law 2026 enters into force.

Jersey will establish its own independent trademark registration system. New UK trademark registrations will no longer be extendable to Jersey, and an international registration designating the UK will no longer automatically provide protection on the island. Applicants seeking protection in both territories will therefore need to cover Jersey separately.

Existing rights will be preserved. UK trademarks already registered in Jersey will be transferred automatically to the new Jersey register. For existing international registrations designating the UK, WIPO will record Jersey as a separate territorial designation. No action is required from current rights holders.

Businesses interested in protection in both the UK and Jersey may wish to extend existing UK registrations to Jersey, or designate the UK through an existing international registration, before 1 August 2026. This may avoid the separate examination, opposition procedure and official fees that will apply under the new system.
