Procedural amendments to enter into force soon

The Madrid Union Assembly has adopted amendments to Rules 3, 18, 25 and 27 of the Regulations under the Madrid Protocol (see WIPO document MM/A/60/3 Prov). The changes will enter into force on 1 November 2026.

The amendments introduce the mandatory use of an official form to cancel the appointment of a representative and expressly allow changes to holders’ and representatives’ email addresses to be recorded. They also remove the obsolete requirement to include an opponent’s address in certain provisional refusal notifications and clarify that payment information is required only where applicable.

The changes are intended to streamline procedures, reduce errors and improve privacy protection within the Madrid System.
